Southeast utilities and pipeline companies plan to build over 20,000 megawatts of natural gas power plants and expand pipeline capacity significantly over the next 15 years, driven largely by data center growth. Data centers are expected to account for 65% to over 85% of the projected electrical load increase in Virginia, South Carolina, and Georgia. There are concerns about potential overbuilding of infrastructure and the financial risks to ratepayers, as well as implications for the energy transition.
