Privacy Policy

This privacy policy applies specifically to datacenters.halttheharm.net (Stop Bad Data Centers). It is adapted from the HHN Privacy Policy, which governs halttheharm.net. If a topic is not addressed here, the HHN Privacy Policy applies.

HHN Data Sharing Terms and Policy

As a general matter, you can browse this site without submitting your personal information to us. However, there are a number of circumstances in which you may need to provide us with your personal information. We will use reasonable efforts to securely process all personal information you provide to us — in particular, those related to the following requests:

  • Access to your personal information;
  • Correction of the personal information that we hold;
  • Deletion of your personal information;
  • A restriction of processing of your personal information;
  • Transfer of your personal information to another party; or
  • Objection to the processing of your personal information based on our legitimate interest (or those of a third party) to use it, and there is something about your particular situation that causes you to object to such processing.

In other words, we rely on some information from users in order to provide our services, but ultimately it’s your decision what services you enroll in, and whether you continue to enroll or delete your information.

We hold your information and use it as described in these terms, and will use reasonable measures to ensure that your personal information is only transferred to third parties who also maintain good standards of protection.

We have a legitimate interest in collecting and processing your information. Our mission is to build a people-powered movement to stop harmful data center development. Pursuing these aims is not in conflict with your rights, and this provides our lawful basis to use your personal information within the limitations set forth herein.

Data Sharing Overview

Big companies call it “privacy policy,” but these terms are really about how we work with data about you. We only collect data to make the site interactive and to improve our work. The bottom line is that we will never sell your data. We will protect it as best we can, make reasonable accommodations to help you keep control of data about you, and remain transparent about the ways we work with it.

The Stop Bad Data Centers website (datacenters.halttheharm.net) is a project of the Halt the Harm Network, operated by Netcentric Campaigns — a nonprofit organization incorporated in the State of Delaware. HHN and Netcentric Campaigns are referred to herein as “We” or “Us.”

This site is published in the United States and is subject to the laws of the United States. If you are located outside the United States and voluntarily submit personal information to us, you consent to the general use of that information as described in this policy and to its transfer to and storage in the United States. We are not liable for damages resulting from the use of information collected from visitors to the site.

Agreement Between Us

We collect and use your information only where:

  • We need it to provide you the site and services, including to operate the site, provide customer support and personalized features, and to protect the safety and security of the services;
  • It satisfies a legitimate interest (which is not overridden by your data protection interests), such as for research and development, to market and promote the site, and to protect our legal rights and interests;
  • You give us consent to do so for a specific purpose; or
  • We need to process your data to comply with a legal obligation.

If you have consented to our use of information about you for a specific purpose, you have the right to change your mind at any time, but this will not affect any processing that has already taken place.

By visiting this website, you are accepting the practices described in this policy. If you do not agree to these terms, please do not use the site.

Why We Collect Data

Our mission depends on building a network and supporting collaboration. We want the site to work well for you. This means sharing information through the site with other users, making some data public, and as needed sharing with certain third parties.

  • When you comment or post on this site, your profile information (name, profile picture) may be visible to other users in the context of that content.
  • News and public-facing content you ask us to promote may be publicly available and indexed by search engines.
  • We use information to respond to your inquiries, communicate about your account, send updates about programs and events, optimize our work, and verify account activity.

Comments

This site requires an approved Halt the Harm Network account and login to post comments. Comments are not open to anonymous visitors.

When you leave a comment, we collect the data shown in the comments form along with your IP address and browser user agent string to help with spam detection. Your profile picture (if set on your account) is visible to the public in the context of your approved comments.

Cookies

When you log in, we will set up cookies to save your login information and screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days; screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me,” your login will persist for two weeks. When you log out, login cookies are removed.

If you edit or publish content, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the ID of the content you just edited. It expires after one day.

Some parts of the site are password-protected. We use cookies to enable you to return to protected areas without re-entering your password. If you disable cookies in your browser, you may not be able to access certain parts of the site.

Embedded Content from Other Websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g., videos, images, articles). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if you had visited the other website directly. Those websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content.

How We Collect Data

You give it to us. In addition to what you provide directly, we collect certain additional information to improve our work and better serve our mission. Here are the common ways data about you ends up in our systems:

  • When you register for an account;
  • When you sign up to receive email updates;
  • When you participate in surveys, panels, or research;
  • When you register for events or programs;
  • When you request information or assistance;
  • When you post comments or fill out forms on the site;
  • When you interact with HHN social media accounts;
  • Records and copies of your correspondence if you contact us.

We also collect non-personal information automatically: IP address, device type, browser type, geolocation (country-level), pages viewed, time and date of access, and referring website. We use Fathom Analytics, Jetpack Stats (from Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com) and Gauges to measure web activity in aggregate. We use these reports to see which pages are useful, not to identify individual visitors.

Cookies and other tracking technologies (e.g., web beacons, pixels) are used to provide functionality and to recognize returning users.

Who We Share Your Data With

We work with third-party service providers for website hosting, maintenance, storage, email delivery, analysis, and related services. These providers act under our instruction and are required to maintain appropriate protections for your information.

The service providers this site uses today are:

  • Pressable (Automattic): hosts this website.
  • Fathom Analytics, Jetpack Stats and Gauges: count visits and page views in aggregate.
  • Kit (formerly ConvertKit): sends our email newsletter and runs the sign-up forms on this site.
  • RightMessage: personalizes the newsletter sign-up prompts you see.
  • Jetpack Forms and Tally: collect what you enter in forms on this site, including requests for help.
  • Circle: hosts the Halt the Harm Network community (network.halttheharm.net), where you create an account when you join.
  • Notion: where we write and manage content for this site. Some pages we share publicly are published on Notion, which sets its own cookies when you visit them.

We do not share your data with unaffiliated groups without your explicit permission. In exceptional circumstances, we may share information to comply with applicable law, enforce our policies, protect the security of the site, protect users or the public from harm, or respond to a legitimate emergency.

If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email.

How Long We Retain Your Data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely so we can recognize and approve follow-up comments automatically.

Account information is retained until you delete your account, or as necessary to comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements. Information you’ve posted (e.g., comments) may remain visible after account deactivation to preserve continuity for other users.

If you have subscribed to email updates, we retain your preferences unless you specifically ask us to delete them.

What Rights You Have Over Your Data

If you have an account on this site or have left a comment, you can request an exported file of the personal data we hold about you. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include data we are obliged to retain for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

To make a data request, contact us at support@halttheharm.net.

Our Policy Toward Children

This site is not directed to individuals under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 16. If we become aware that a child under 16 has provided us with personal information, we will take steps to delete it.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will post any changes on this page and, if the changes are significant, provide more prominent notice. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
