Air permits for data centers in Virginia are issued through regional DEQ offices. Contact information for regional air permit managers is available on the DEQ website. Virginia DEQ created a searchable public database listing all air permits issued for data center backup diesel generators, providing organizers a transparency tool to track facility development and emissions. As of late 2024, the database lists 184 existing permits and 21 pending applications covering nearly 9,000 backup diesel generators statewide. This represents a significant transparency victory.
Organizers can now identify which companies are operating where, how many generators each facility has, and track new applications in real-time. VA Organizers can use this tool to monitor expansion in their regions, calculate cumulative air quality impacts, identify facilities for targeted campaigns, and submit public comments on pending applications.
